Roy Leon “Gilly” Gilmore passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis with his family by his side.
He was born on September 7, 1938 to Roy and Bessie Bankes Gilmore in Smithfield, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gregory Gilmore and two sisters, Lucille Walton and Dorothy Blakely.
He is survived by his wife Deborah Gilmore; children, David (Rita) Gilmore, Nancy Gilmore (Mitch), James (Becky) Gilmore, Tina Gilmore, Melissa (Jeff) Wayland, Michelle (Kevin) Updike, Robert (Chelsea) Schoaff, Rickey (Katey) Schoaff, Megan Schoaff and Randy Schoaff; one sister, Zelma Rosich; 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Leon “Gilly” served in the United States Navy, was a coal miner for 42 years, and later managed and then owned a boarding stable in Macomb with his wife. He was a member of the Lamoine Trails Saddle Club and played on a local pool league for many years.
Some of his favorite pastimes were riding and caring for horses, trips to Eminence, Missouri for the Cross Country Trail Ride, attending the Tri-State Rodeo, teaching line dancing, camping, hosting fish frys, driving his tractors, and most of all, partying and spending time with his beloved family and friends.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW in Macomb on August 3, 2022 from 4 to 8 p.m.
