Gertrude C. Dorothy, 101, of Springfield, formerly of Blandinsville passed away at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Lewis Christian Memorial Home in Springfield.
She was born on July 31, 1919 in Nauvoo, Illinois to Tony and Neva Koch. She married Glenn Dorothy in December of 1943 in Macomb, Illinois. He passed away on November 9, 1996.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara S. Bean and two sisters, Irene Schenck and Doris Lerche Deitrich.
Gertrude is survived by one son, Gary Dorothy of Palm Springs, California and one daughter, Janice (Patrick) Fitzgerald of Springfield, Illinois as well as granddaughters, Kristin and Megan Fitzgerald, and great-grandchildren, Emma and Ryan and several nieces and cousins.
Gertrude lived all of her married life in Blandinsville where she was a homemaker and assisted her husband I the operation of Dorothy’s Standard Service. After completing her studies at Western Illinois State Teachers College at an early age, she taught at Terre Haute and LaHarpe grade schools.
She was an avid gardener and spent many hours tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was active in the Blandinsville United Methodist Church where she assisted with many church activities.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook, baker, and seamstress. Even in her later years, she insisted on making comfort pillows to make productive use of her free time.
Private graveside service will be held at Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville with Reverend Beth Nelson officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Blandinsville United Methodist Church or the Blandinsville-Hire Fire Protection District.
