It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Franklin “Cowboy Jim” Aten, who left this world at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

Jim was born on June 7, 1945, in Schuyler County to Guy Franklin and Ruth Helen Aten. On April 15, 1967, he married the love of his life, Elaine Kay Farrar, in Industry. Their marriage was one of deep devotion and lasting love. Elaine preceded him in death in 2015, a loss Jim carried in his heart every day. He cared for her faithfully throughout her battle with cancer, and after her passing, he retired. He never truly recovered from losing her and visited her grave daily for a year — a quiet testament to his enduring love. He was also preceded by his parents ,one brother in infancy Robert Aten ,sister and brother in law Elaine and Herb Bozard, sister and brother in law Mary Jane and Bill Pollock, and sister and brother in law Joyce and Marshall Litchfield. He is survived by his daughter Staci (Jason) Danner of Industry, and son Bradley (Pennie) Aten of Clarksville, Tenn., 5  grandchidren Beau Martin, Sydney Danner, Christian Danner, Caitlin Aten and Jenna Aten, 3 great grandchildren Jada Hanks, Jacelyn Martin and River Martin, 2 sisters  Connie (Bill) Heitman, Bonnie (John) Brinton , and 1 brother Neil (Phyllis) Aten , many nieces and nephews also survive.

Jim was a graduate of Industry High School and spent nearly his entire life in the Industry area. He built a respected career running his own concrete business and earned a reputation as one of the very best in the trade. His work ethic, craftsmanship, and pride in a job well done were known throughout the community.

Beyond his work, Jim had a deep love for horses. He trained horses and operated a stable over the years, a passion that brought him great joy and reflected his patient, steady nature.

Jim was a familiar and beloved presence around town. He had lunch every day at Jackson Street Pub, where he had his own bar stool and even his own special beer glass. Each afternoon, he could be found at his “station” on the edge of Industry; if he wasn’t there, people would ask about him to make sure he was alright. In the evenings, he visited the Windmill Pub like clockwork, where he was known and welcomed by many friends. Jim was not just a regular — he was part of the heartbeat of the town.

“Cowboy Jim” will be remembered for his strong hands, his steady presence, his loyalty, and above all, his deep love for Elaine. His life was one of hard work, devotion, and quiet consistency. He leaves behind a legacy woven into the community he loved so dearly.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 3,2026 at the Industry United Methodist Church.Kendall Litchfield and Pastor Randy Burwell will officiate. Burial will be at the Industry Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday March 2,2026 at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Industry United Methodist Church or to M.D.H. Hospice.
