Joan Harris Obituary

Joan Vredenburgh Harris, age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the Elms Care Facility in Macomb, Illinois.  She was born on July 29, 1938, to Donald and Marion (Odell) Vredenburgh in Yonkers, New York, and grew up in the Bronx, New York.
Upon the death of her mother in 1958, Joan moved to Newark, Ohio, where she met her husband, Ransom S. Harris, Jr.  They married on November 28, 1959, and enjoyed 56 years together until Ransom passed away on October 12, 2015.
After starting their family, Joan and Ransom moved to Lancaster, Ohio in 1970.  While raising her children, Joan attended Ohio University (Lancaster) and earned a bachelor’s degree in history/education.  She became an elementary teacher, teaching second and fifth grade in Lancaster for many years.
In 1986, Joan and Ransom moved to Toledo, Ohio, where they retired.  After retirement, they enjoyed traveling, visiting places including Hawaii, Key West, and California.  She and Ransom joined Epworth United Methodist Church, and Joan was very involved in the church’s activities, including working in the church office for many years.
Joan enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and going out to lunch with her friends.  She looked forward to visits with her family and loved spending time with her three beloved cats.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons Keith (Rosaida) Harris of Moorpark, California, Steven (Kimberly) Harris of Bowling Green, Kentucky, daughter Karen Morgan of Macomb, Illinois, grandchildren James, Scott, Christopher, Matt, Leslie, Katie, and Brandon, and her great-grandchildren Olivia, Madelyn, and Kai.  She is also survived by her sister, Trudy (Charlie) McLean of Quaker City, Ohio, as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ransom, seven brothers Fletcher, Bill, Dick, Don, Bob, Kent, Ed, and one sister, Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 11:00 am with an hour visitation prior to the service.
