John C Adair

John C. Adair, 101, of Macomb passed away at 6:05 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024 at the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb.
He was born on September 3, 1922 in Adams County to Sherman and Lelie (Green) Adair. He married Betty Young McCullough on May 21, 1949 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2008. John Attended Plymouth area schools and Colchester High where he enjoyed playing basketball. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors are two daughters, Marla Shinn of Macomb, Illinois and Patricia (Daniel Cortelyou) of Marietta, Illinois; one son, J. Scott (Julie) Adair of Macomb, Illinois; one step-daughter-in-law, Linda McCullough o f Cumming, Georgia; grandchildren, Rene’ (Daryl) Ford, John Shinn, Darrin Cortleyou and Derek (Jake Sapstein) Cortelyou; step-grandchildren, Donald McCullough, Darrin (Sharon)McCullough, Kristen (Joe) George and Monica Daniels; numerous great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; two  great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Charles Adair, sisters, Mary Shepard and June Cameron, step-son, Ronald McCullough and grandsons, Marc Cookson and David Shinn.
He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving two and one-half years with the 81st Engineer Combat Battalion attached to the 106th infantry. In December of 1944, after the Germans overran the 106th, the 81st Combat Engineers’ Commanding Officer refused to surrender. For its actions that day, the 81st Combat Engineers received the Distinguished Unit Citation which praised the unit’s “extraordinary heroism, gallantly, determination and espirit de corps.”  He received the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Campaign Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct medal, Meritorious Unit Award and one Overseas Service Bar. He was awarded four Bronze Stars as well as receiving a Purple Heart for being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed by Globe American Corp., Coca Cola Plant of Macomb, Argyle Lake State Park, Colchester and Bower Roller Bearing, Macomb, retiring from NTN Bower Roller Bearing. He farmed and raised livestock on their farm southwest of Tennessee, Illinois in his younger years. He enjoyed working in his yard, watching sports, camping and spending winters in the Rio Grande Valley.
Grave side services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2024 at Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb with Pastor Robert Greene officiating. There will be no visitation.
