Karyl Lee (Kastenschmidt) Draeger, 78, formerly of Macomb, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at Grand View Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Peoria. Karyl was born May 4, 1943, in La Crosse, WI, to Clarence and Emma (Storandt) Kastenschmidt. She graduated from Central High School in La Crosse in 1961, then received a secretarial certificate at La Crosse Vocational School.
She married James (Jim) Draeger Aug. 20, 1966, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crosse. He preceded her in death Feb. 16, 2012. She is survived by children Kimberly (Mark) Jensen of Murphy, TX, and Todd (Cristina Werling) Draeger of Minneapolis, MN.; grandchildren Matthew and Kaylee Jensen and Dietrich Werling-Draeger; brother George (Joyce) Kastenschmidt of La Crescent, MN; sister Judith Draeger of Watertown, WI; sister-in-law Donna Draeger of Waupaca, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim; sisters Phyllis Kasten, Jessie West, Lois Barton, Dorothy Evenson, and Betty Holberg; brother Claire Kastenschmidt; and brothers-in-law Robert and Barry Draeger.
Karyl worked as medical secretary at Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse before getting married. She and Jim lived in Beaver Dam, WI, and Fairfield, IA, before moving to Macomb. She spent many happy years raising her children before returning to work at the Macomb Travel Center and Bethpage. She and Jim loved to travel, visiting Hawaii twice, Florida and Texas numerous times, and many other states. Karyl was an excellent baker; did beautiful sewing, needlepoint, knitting, and crocheting; and loved being a grandmother. She and Jim were long-time members of the Macomb Dinner Club, and previously had attended Immanuel Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran churches.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb.
