Martha Louise Robbins, age 97, of Macomb, Illinois, passed away at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Wesley Village in Macomb .
She was born on April 18, 1924 in Huntington, West Virginia the daughter of Charles Edwin and Elizabeth (Troxell) Johnson.
She married Karel Swanson in Macomb, Illinois on November 26, 1952. He passed away in 1977. She later married Lyle W. Robbins in Macomb, Illinois on June 29, 1984. He passed away on August 15, 2001.
She is survived by one daughter, Wanda (Ed Card) Foster of Macomb, Illinois, one stepdaughter, Kay (Gus Reyes) Robbins of Brooklyn, New York, two grandsons: Joseph Karel (Doneice) Trotter of Winters, California and Michael David Foster of Grand Rapids, Michigan and one great-grandson Ransom Bear Trotter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, one brother, Louis Johnson, and two sisters, Mary Johnson and Betty Johnson.
Martha graduated from Ashland Senior High School, in Ashland, Kentucky in 1942, graduated from Ashland Junior College, in Ashland, Kentucky in 1944, graduated from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in Richmond, Kentucky with a Bachelors Degree in Social Studies in 1948, and graduated from Vanderbilt Peabody College, in Nashville, Tennessee with a Masters Degree in Library Science in 1950.
She was a high school librarian in Gueydon, LA in the spring of 1950, the Catalog Librarian at East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas from 1950 - 1951, Catalog Librarian at Western Illinois University in Macomb from 1951 - 1956, and 1967 until retirement in 1984.
Martha was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church which is now Scotland Trinity Presbyterian Church for many years and was a children's and adult Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, active in the Social Service Society, Presbyterian Women, and the Church Choir.
Martha was formerly active in Macomb Christian Women's Club, was a Spoon River reading tutor and enjoyed singing with the Spoon River College Singing Seniors. She was a volunteer at McDonough District Hospital for many years greeting patients, visitors and staff at the hospital reception desk with a friendly smile and offering assistance. Martha enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and family fishing trips to Northern Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the Scotland Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev Dan Colvin officiating. The family will meet with friends one hour before the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Camp Creek Cemetery south of Macomb.
