Melva attended Marseilles Schools and went to Steven’s College in Columbia, Missouri where she received her nursing degree. She went on to do her residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and worked at Ryburn-King Hospital in Otttawa.
When her children were born, she left nursing to raise them. She worked as a bookkeeper with her husband at Allender Buick in Marseilles. At 74, she went back to school to refresh her nursing degree and then went on to work at La Salle County Nursing Home in the Alzheimer’s unit.
She served on the County Board for 4 years, then went to be a member of the La Salle County Health Department Board for 28 years. She was huge in the non-profit organization for Zonta ( a world wide women’s organization). She dabbled in Avon (she was her best customer).
She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. She lived with her daughter, Beth for over 20 years. They were Thelma and Louise and had a special relationship that will last forever and will eventually ride together again.
There will be no public services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
