Virgil Kenneth Finch, 92, formerly of Sciota, Illinois, passed away peacefully with family on June 24, 2023, at Wesley Village in Macomb, IL. He was born on March 14, 1931, in Industry Township to Luther and Vada (Hume) Finch. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Emma “Jean” McDowell, on July 2, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, four nephews, a niece, and a daughter-in-law Deborah Finch.
Virgil is survived by two sons, Larry (Lana) Finch of Burnside and Owen (Redina) Finch of Sciota; six grandsons, Bryan (Laura) Finch of Hamilton, Broc (Claire) Finch of Carthage, Trevor (Tiffany) Finch of LaHarpe, Brandon (Jenny) Finch of Sciota, and Bradon (Madison Johnson) Finch of Sciota and Andrew (Sierra) Finch; one granddaughter, Amelia (Josh Livermore) Finch, living in Orland Park; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Virgil graduated from Good Hope High School in 1950, attended the fall quarter at Western Illinois University, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force on December 4, 1950. He attended basic training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and was then sent to Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts for medics. Virgil served in Iceland, Amarillo, TX, and Montgomery, AL where he met Jean. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1953, and married Jean a week later, on December 10, 1953, in Montgomery, Alabama.
Virgil and Jean moved to Sciota on January 1, 1954. He worked at Hemp & Co. (American Thermos) in Macomb; the Farmers Elevator in Sciota; WIU Office of Public Safety, and then the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years before retiring in 1997. After retirement, Virgil raised cattle and worked as a bailiff at the McDonough County Courthouse for Sheriffs Stan Carman and Mike Johnson.
Virgil was a member of Sciota Christian Church where he served on the board and taught Sunday school classes. He transferred to LaHarpe Christian Church in 2014, and attended at Blandinsville, Maple Avenue, and Wesley Village. He loved church, being with family and friends, playing card games, and watching college and professional football.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Reverend A. Lee Unger officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb with full military rites being conducted by the Macomb American Legion and the Macomb VFW.
